The Fire Islander
That’s what I call this sandwich. The name comes from the place where it was born and more importantly, feeling it evokes. Fire Island is a barrier island just south of Long Island. It is a popular summer destination for city-weary singles looking to share a summer house with a bunch of strangers. I was one of those strangers when I was 25. This is the sandwich I made for myself every time I was out there.
This sandwich is good for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is excellent for both curing hangovers or eating while working on your next hangover. It is cool and comforting, salty and zippy. You can dress it up with a cloth napkin or eat it standing in the kitchen in your wet bathing suit with sand on your feet.
